New Milton Infant School
Together, we make a difference
We warmly welcome parents and carers whose child has been offered a place to start school in Year R in September 2024.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to you and your child to New Milton Infant School, following your successful application for a Year R place for September 2024.
Starting school is a very exciting time for your child but it can also be a little bit worrying for some children and parents/carers. Our aim is to make sure that we take away any fears by offering a comprehensive induction programme. This year, your child will be taught in straight Year R classes. You will find out who your child’s class teacher will be by Friday 12th July.
Below is a powerpoint with information about the school day and important dates regarding transition.
New Parents Information Meeting
We would like to invite you, preferably without your child if possible, to a New Parents Information Meeting on Tuesday 11th June at 5:30pm – 6:30pm where you will be able to meet the Year R staff, look around, find out more about your child starting school and ask any questions you may have.
Visits to nurseries and preschools
Over the coming weeks, the Year R teachers will be visiting the nurseries and preschools to talk to staff and meet the children in their familiar settings, where possible. The Year R staff will be delivering Welcome Packs to your child’s preschool. Within those packs you will see registration and permissions form. Please could you complete those and bring them with you to the New Parent Information Meeting or drop them into the school office at your earliest convenience.
Home visits
This term the Year R teachers will come to visit you and your child at home to meet informally for approximately 15 minutes. These are aimed at giving your child the chance to meet their teacher in the comfort and security of their own home and start building positive relationships between home and school. The teacher will be able to chat to your child about their interests, family, pets, etc and will also be able to answer any questions they may have about starting school. It also gives you, the parent or carer, the chance to discuss any concerns you may have about your child starting school.
The home visits will take place on the following dates;
Monday 17th June
Tuesday 18th June
Wednesday 19th June
The team are busy planning their routes and we will notify you of your home visit date as soon as possible.
Stay and Play sessions
We would like to invite your child to attend two ‘Stay and Play’ sessions. These provide opportunities to support transition into school, for child to meet their future class mates, the Year R staff, begin to build relationships, play and have fun!
Stay and Play dates are as follows;
Date | Time |
|
Friday 28th June |
9:30am – 10:30am |
Parents/carers are welcome to stay in school with their child.
Mrs Wake will have an informal parent ‘Meet the headteacher’ coffee session in the school hall which is optional for parents if their child is happy and settled in class. This is a great opportunity for Mrs Wake to get to know you and for you to meet other Year R parents.

Starting School in September
All children will transition into school part time for the first two weeks of the academic year and full time from week 3, Monday 16th September. This is to enable us to get to know your children really well, build relationships, help them understand school expectations and transition smoothly into school.
They will be split into 2 groups; Group A and Group B.
We will inform you of who your child’s class teacher is via an emailed letter by12th July. Within this we will share whether your child will be in Group A or Group B for the first two weeks. To help us group children we will use information from the home visits, preschools and the Stay and Play to ensure your child is with some of their friends.
